Once you realize that you are a sinner and have trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior, the next step is to proclaim that you are a follower of Christ - Baptism is that step. Baptism does not earn your salvation or make it official; instead, it simply shows what God has already done in your heart. Going under the water represents your old life dying with Christ. Emerging from the water represents your new life in Him.
